Victoria legalises abortion
Friday, 10 October 2008

Today, the Victorian Parliament's Upper House legalised abortion in Victoria by a vote of 23-17.

Abortion was and still is effectively available on demand up to 20 weeks gestation, and in some states even later, for the last 40 years. This is despite the fact that in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, the Northern Territory and Tasmania, it is a criminal offence to unlawfully supply or administer any poison, or to use or supply any instrument with the intent to procure a miscarriage.

Victoria rejects euthanasia
Wednesday, 10 September 2008

Today, the Victorian Parliament today convincingly rejected a euthanasia Bill by a vote of 25-13.

Greens MP Colleen Hartland introduced a private members Bill to legislate right-to-die laws in the upper house in June. "I'm very disappointed because we've put a lot of effort into this, the disappointing part is all the people ringing my office urging me to do this and for them this is a terrible disappointment," Ms Hartland said.

Abortion pill debate flares up again (16/12/08)

A long-running debate over the abortion pill has flared up again, ahead of meetings this week expected to clear the way for the drug's introduction across Italy.

The RU486 pill was approved under the previous, centre-left administration nearly a year ago but tensions are mounting afresh as the Italian Pharmaceutical Agency (AIFA) prepares for the final licensing phase.

AIFA will meet on Tuesday and Thursday to consider the registration application by RU486's manufacturers, Exelgyn.

Much of the review will be little more than a formality, as the drug has already been used safely in a number of European countries for many years.

The only likely obstacle to its introduction could arise from a dispute over RU486's registered price in Italy, which AIFA and Exelgyn have yet to agree on.

It is “Illegal” to Stop Food and Hydration of Vulnerable Patients: Top Italian Minister (17/12/08)

A high-level minister in the Italian government has called “illegal” the proposal to starve and dehydrate to death vulnerable patients in the care of the country’s nationalised health service. The news comes within hours of Italian media confirming that Eluana Englaro, known as Italy’s Terri Schiavo, was to be moved this week to a clinic that is willing to participate in her killing by removing her feeding and hydration tube.

Maurizio Sacconi, Italy’s Minister of Labour, Health and Social Policies, told a press conference that it is “illegal” for health care facilities funded by the government to remove the food and hydration of vulnerable patients with the intention of killing them. He referred to Article 25 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities that says to stop feeding and hydration is discrimination against disabled people.
