Victoria legalises abortion

Today, the Victorian Parliament's Upper House legalised abortion in Victoria by a vote of 23-17.

Abortion was and still is effectively available on demand up to 20 weeks gestation, and in some states even later, for the last 40 years. This is despite the fact that in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, the Northern Territory and Tasmania, it is a criminal offence to unlawfully supply or administer any poison, or to use or supply any instrument with the intent to procure a miscarriage.

Victoria rejects euthanasia

Today, the Victorian Parliament today convincingly rejected a euthanasia Bill by a vote of 25-13.

Greens MP Colleen Hartland introduced a private members Bill to legislate right-to-die laws in the upper house in June. "I'm very disappointed because we've put a lot of effort into this, the disappointing part is all the people ringing my office urging me to do this and for them this is a terrible disappointment," Ms Hartland said.

Celebrities serious about adoptions (27/10/08)

The Richie-Maddens may be getting an addition to their family! According to Star magazine, Nicole Richie (daughter of Lionel Richie of “The Commodores” fame) really wants to adopt a baby. She’s come into contact with low-income families through her charity organization, The Richie-Madden Children’s Foundation.

A source close to her and Joel says, “Nicole is seriously looking into it and asking a lot of questions about adopting. Nicole has been visiting Beyond Shelter in Los Angeles two or three times a week and spends a couple of hours with homeless children. She loves being around them."

Bubble-wrap saves 23 week old premature baby (28/10/08)

He was such a special delivery, and such incredibly fragile goods, that the usual sort of wrapping just wouldn't do.

The little mite swaddled in bubble wrap is Gregor Craig, who was born at just 24 weeks weighing a tiny 1lb 14oz - so small that his father's wedding ring fitted over his arm.

His chances of survival were slim, but doctors wanted to give him every chance.

Saving abandoned children - too important to ignore! (3/11/08)

Senator Helen Polley has continued her campaign to implement 'Safe Haven' legislation in Australia with a speech in the Senate chamber today.

“Safe Havens give mothers a chance to take their babies, who may otherwise be abandoned, to a designated area and leave them there to be looked after - no questions asked.  If Save Havens were present in Australia then children who may otherwise be abandoned and left to die may stand a chance”, said Senator Polley.

The Senator reminded members of the recent cases of babies that had been abandoned in bus stops, driveways, outside hospitals, and on church doorsteps.
